In the UK we have a long tradition of professional legal advice going back to at least the 12th century. The court language was Norman French and this required a representative who could translate the proceedings for the plaintiff. These people could also appear in court on behalf of the litigant and were known at the time as attorneys. These legal representatives eventually became know as what we now call solicitors.
Amazingly as it may seem this profession was basically unregulated until the Law Society in the mid 19th century was founded and given a Royal Charter in 1845 to enforce national standards of conduct and education. The Council Of the Law Society is the governing board that regulates the profession.
